«A. Kylllini ( Zireia) mountain.
We started our trip from the coastal plain of northern Peloponnese, near the town of Xilokastro, in the Korinth area. WE took a country road winding up into the mountain of Zireia, passing through olive and lemon groves.
As we drove up, the scenery changed , and we found ourselves driving through vineyards. After about 40 km on the steep ascending road, we descended slightly into the fertile plain of Stymfalia, surrounded by mountains ladden with fir trees, while before us lay the long peaceful plain with the lake at the northern side.
Stymfalia is well known for its mythological association with Heracles’s twelve trials. One of his trials, the fifth one, was to kill the terrible Stymfalian birds, who were terrorizing the locals.
The scenery at Stymfalia is spectacular ,the spring air is clear and the quietnesss is only interrupted by the calls of birds and the buzz of insects on the numerous variety of wild flowers and fruit trees.
Leaving Stymfalia, we climbed further upto heights of approx. 1000 meters through quiet villages, before descending by winding roadsand through fir tree-clad mountains, onto the plain of Feneos, dotted with small hamlets. Such a hamlet is Messino, where we met the glamorous Roula, purveyor of Quince, Sour cherry, pergamon and other fruit preserves.
We wound our way across the plain and visited the plain of Feneos , and the remains of the ancient city.
Leaving Feneos plain, we drove along the river bed of Olvios, and then started our descent, where there suddenly emerged at a point a magnificent view of the Korinthian Gulf.
We visited the roadside shrine of «Panagia of the Shelters» ( Panagia ton Katafygion), where Greeks used to hide when persecuted by the Turks during the 1821 Revolution.
Panagia of the Shelters
As the day drove to its close and the setting sun’s rays were hidden by the mountain tops, we descended through steep twists and turns down to the seaside road and to «home», full of the day’s impressions, and needing a goood rest. Till the next day, when mountain Helmos awaited us..
